Gear Shift Lever O/D Button

My gear shift lever has a O/D button on the end of it which turns the overdrive off (OFF indicated on the dashboard).
Button is not shown in my owners manual !
Have never bothered to use it, so I obviously have overdrive engaged all the time.

Interested to know if anyone makes regular use of this button?
Do you get any benefits by turning it off and on ?

Hi Brouwer

I've had my Stepwgn 4 years and never used it once.

I've just had to dig out my manual to see what it does (switches off 4th gear for going up/down hills).

Not much use for it on Lincolnshire's hills.

Next time I go camping I'll try it.

Hi, this button is really useful to allow you to sustain a gear while carrying a load uphill or just being a bit sporty.

As you'll know automatic boxes are always trying to find the highest ratio and in the circumstances above you really don't want the clumsiness of using the kickdown on the throttle pedal. So if you use the overdrive button the box will allow you to sustain say 3rd gear until you feel the car is ready to engage 4th.

Living on the North Kent Downs I have the joy of 1:6 hill ratios so I need this !!!

Give it a go, you'll be a master in 5 minutes. steveF

Thanks Brian & Stevef.

I'll give it a try.
Might be difficult to get into the habit of using it after 2 years,

Easy on mine - doesn't have one - just 1,2,3,D.
