Windscreen wipers

Postby PARR » Wed Oct 29, 2014 1:48 pm

Steppy RF4 2002 - the windscreen wiper linkage bushes have loosened/worn. Wipers hit both the right side of the screen and the scuttle.

My local (very good) dealer can't give an estimate until seen - he doesn't know without that whether the UK CR-V (or other Honda) linkage is the same.

Anyone with experience of this?

Try googling the CRV forums to see if they have any comments on them re the bushes. If they are not too expensive, it might be worth trying a CRV one anyways :D

Hi - thanks for the suggestion.
I spoke to my dealer who recognised the symptoms instantly, but did not know if CR-V bushes would be enough or appropriate - he was to speak to his parts manager (the one who got the information about brakes in other models for me) who may know what could be used. He also mentioned that the motor may also need attention but I think that that could be the same as the CR-V.
I looked on the web - a bush repair kit for the CR-V in the States was priced at $22.50. The problem I can see is the removal of the shroud at bottom of the screen - it seems to go behind the left and right screen trim which fits into the roof rails!
It's beyond my expertise by a long way. I'll be going to him probably Monday for an assessment.

Ah now I can help - the shroud is just clipped on ... our windscreen was replaced earlier this year and I took a few photos to record the event. Have a look at this one:

The image size is somewhat restricted so I can show you a close up - I could email you a larger one if you like. :D

Of course the lower shroud is still in place but I think it will just be clipped on in a similar way.

Hope this helps in some way

Help? My dear sir, this is superb.
The shroud has three 'push rivets' - one at each end and one centrally where it sits on the scuttle metalwork and two screws which hold the bottom of the side trim over it. The wiper spindles themselves also hold it on. (Both small flanges for the screws of the trim have broken - I wonder if there was a windscreen replacement in Japan?)
Doesn't seem to matter though!
Much of the mechanism is visible through the grill, but not enough!
I am very grateful to you.

Went to dealer yesterday - they decided that to strip the front down to reach the wiper mechanism would cost £55.
Waited about half an hour for report, only to be told that they didn't want to 'be involved' in case they damaged something (a clip was mentioned) that they could not repair. So, no strip down - at least no charge!
They said they had put the chassis number through the system, to be informed that 'no parts are available for this vehicle'.
They refused to put the queries directly to Honda, saying that the system was sufficient.
I have emailed Honda, who tell me that all genuine parts are available, but that the Stepwgn was never imported officially to the UK. This to me means that parts will take longer.
I have asked Honda to tell me if any other Honda vehicle uses the same wiper linkage - I assume the RF3s would, and possible the older ones as well - just a different wiper arm. Possible also the CR-V.
I will strip this down in the New Year and photograph the mechanism, try to find out if it is the ball joint, and if so I'll get a repair kit from the US! There is an English firm that makes kits for linkages for almost all makes in the UK, so they might have something when I can get dimensions.
I suppose I could go to a Japanese parts specialist, but their prices are very high.
More to come later, but don't hold your breath.
