Can anyone please tell me what the button does, that is next to the fan speed switch ?

Hmmm - I guess you have pressed it to try and you didn't get ejected through the roof! 
Time to buy a handbook from the club perhaps? ... What model year is your stepwagon? ( or ask Dandruff who has one already!)
