My new Stepwagon

Postby CraigB » Thu Jun 24, 2010 9:50 am

Hi everyone, came across this forum whilst searching for info on obtaining insurance quotes for a Jap import.

I've not picked it up yet but here she is.. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... K:MEDWX:IT

I've tried 'go compare' and my current insurer's (Swinton) but both say the vehicle reg (R935 CAK) appears on the database as a Honda CRV, also Swinton say they won't insure the vehicle because its a Japanese import.

Any help or advice appreciated :D

Thanks
CraigB

Hi there Craig
I'm in the same position as you! due to pick up my first ever (new to me) Wagon sometime next week and ringing round to find insurance ...(see my post under the Insurance topic in the Board INdex list ...)
my conversion company Wellhouse Leisure quoted me an insurance co yesterday who specialise in Japanese imports They are called Lifesure. I got quite a good quote from them compared to 2GetherFS (who this club recommend and have apparently got an agreement with for Stepwagon owners/users).
See how you get on!
PS Welcome!!!

Thanks for the welcome :D

That's slightly more than I'm paying Lifesure.

I was quoted well over £500 by 2Gether FS - the excuse being that despite 7 years NCD and 50 years driving experience I had no transferable NCD!
I eventually finished up with Mark Richard (formerly Tett Hamilton) for £375, but will investigate the motor camper/caravan world of insurance when I have time.
The other difficulty I had was that I was abroad for the 4 weeks immediately before collecting the Wagon, and Mark Richard was the only firm to cover in principle and quote that far in advance - all I had to do was phone from the garage with the registration number and I was covered from that moment.

I've recently renewed my Wellhouse campervan insurance with Safeguard for £274 which includes AA European Breakdown cover which otherwise I would have purchased separately.

Hi Lewis & All

I called them 2 years ago when I bought the campervan from Wellhouse. Safeguard's number were on Wellhouse's list and I've stayed with them since. As I'll probably be taking the campervan across the channel every year (had 3 weeks in Italy this year) the European Breakdown cover was important to me. Safeguard were also willing to take into account the NCD I had on my company car on confirmation from its insurers.

If you look at Safeguard's website it appears that they are only caravan/motorhome insurers. They don't insure DIY conversions and probably not unconverted.

Interesting what CraigB says in his original post about Swinton not insuring the vehicle because it's a Japanese import. My payment to Safeguard shows on my bank statement as "Swinton".

Regards

Brian
