Window rust from closure fittings.
Another non member: I would you sand them down with say medium sand paper and the mask the rubber seal. I'm useless with any engineering but could probably AV a go.
Vantastic: I took mine off and black smooth hammerite painted them after first rustoleum treated them a while ago and they are still in good shape.
They were fairly easy to remove - I seem to recall the studs were screwed together - ie the front face rotated and came out that way. See item 2/3 here
